The 968 model replaced the 944 in 1992 and was produced for 4 model years. 12,776 were produced, of which 4389 were cabriolets.

The 968 was powered by an updated version of the 944's straight-4 engine, displacing 3.0 L. The 968's engine was the second-largest 4-cylinder ever offered in a production car up to that time and was also the last Porsche sold with a four-cylinder engine.
